43rd Congress of the International Psychoanalytical Association, New Orleans, USA - PERSONALITY DISORDERS:
ACTINGS AND RESCUE FANTASIES IN CINEMA AND PSYCHOANALYSIS

Panel held on the 11 March 2004. Coord. Ana Sloninsky and Liliana Pedron.

After listening to several comments, Hilda Catz (Buenos Aires) proposed and explanation based on Bion's developments. Catz thought that this sort of patient causes analysts to lose their capacity for thinking, and recommended that analysts keep such capacity under observation, bearing in mind that in this kind of association it is very difficult to express ideas and avoid actings. Catz said that Bion had explained with deep comprehension how analysts have to display their skill and modify the setting with what he called a 'rêverie capacity'. The relationship with their thoughts is in danger, so analytic capacity often comes under attack. Catz added that, following Frances Tustin, developments, analysts could be forced into a position of cruelty or seduction, losing their analytic role.
